Environment

Koskisen’s environmental management is based on identifying and managing material environmental aspects and on continuous improvement of operations. Environmental aspects are updated annually as part of managing risks, impacts, and opportunities, and they are reviewed as part of the regularly updated double materiality analysis, which also includes stakeholder input through a separate process. Management is based on the company’s Environmental Principles, which address these aspects, as well as on a certified environmental management system and valid environmental permits.

Koskisen’s production facilities are located in Järvelä, Hirvensalmi, and Iisvesi in Finland, and in Toporów and Skwierzyna in Poland. In Finland, the units hold environmental permits valid until further notice, while in Poland no separate permits are required. Environmental impacts, risks, and opportunities are identified for each unit, and management plans are updated regularly.

In addition to permit requirements, the most material environmental aspects focus on three priority areas, which are also described in the company’s annual report:

  • Climate change mitigation – Emissions are reduced by developing production processes and logistics, and by providing long-lasting wood products that store carbon throughout their life cycle.
  • Safeguarding biodiversity – Forest management and wood harvesting are planned to support ecosystem health and the preservation of species.
  • Resource use and circular economy – Side streams are utilized in products and energy production, and recyclability of materials is considered in procurement.

In daily operations, attention is also paid to preventing pollution and managing water use as part of the company’s environmental management system, with necessary monitoring carried out in close co-operation with authorities in line with permit requirements. Koskisen continuously seeks to reduce environmental impacts, promote the wise use of natural resources, and support the long-term development of the business in line with the principles of sustainable development.

More detailed information on the key priority areas is available in Koskisen’s annual report.
