Koskisen Zero building boards to construction

Koskisen Zero building boards bring biobased alternatives also to demanding construction

Koskisen is expanding the Zero board product family with fully biobased building boards made from renewable raw materials, suitable for demanding construction sites. The new ZeroFloor and ZeroWall building boards combine the performance and application areas of traditional building boards with the features familiar from the Zero product family.

Sales Manager Eemi Valjakka

Product and Development Manager Pasi Marttila and Sales Manager Eemi Valjakka explain that the P6-strength-class ZeroFloor building board enables the use of a fully biobased board in floor structures. Previously, Zero products have been available as furniture or wall boards.

“Now we basically have the whole package ready. Zero products can now be used in furniture as well as all the way to structural floors”, Valjakka states.

Better indoor air and a smaller carbon footprint

Although wood naturally contains small amounts of formaldehyde, Zero products use no added formaldehyde in their adhesives. Instead, the adhesive is lignin-based and therefore fully biobased. This improves indoor air quality and supports, for example, meeting emission limits.

Marttila also highlights the low EPD values, which support carbon footprint calculations in construction projects:

“With Zero products, clearly lower values are achieved in calculations. Projects can receive better scoring when low carbon emissions are increasingly required.”

In addition to Koskisen’s standard products, the Zero product family is also ready for the EU’s tightening emission limits. The REACH Regulation, coming into force in August, will tighten the formaldehyde emission limits for construction materials. Koskisen has prepared for this well in advance. According to Valjakka, Zero products are already low-emission.

“In addition, our products have the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, which demonstrates that they meet strict Nordic environmental criteria”, Valjakka notes.

No changes to familiar working methods

Using Zero products does not require changes to current working methods. According to Marttila, this is a significant advantage for construction companies.

“Builders do not want familiar processes to change. Zero boards work exactly like conventional boards, but their environmental features are better”, Marttila points out.
