Koskisen’s plywood mill in Järvelä has been a cornerstone of quality, customer-driven product development and industrial expertise for six decades. It is equally known for its flexibility and its ability to meet both small and large customer needs.
“Customization and close cooperation with customers have been key competitive advantages since the 1960s. This has enabled business growth and continuous improvement in product quality,” says CEO Jukka Pahta.
Plywood production began in Järvelä in 1966, when Kalevi Koskinen made the bold decision to build a birch plywood mill. Constructing the mill was a major investment — and a risk, at a time when Finland already had 27 plywood mills in operation.
The risk paid off: the start of plywood production accelerated Koskisen’s growth and laid the foundation for the continuity of its operations. The plywood mill remains a central part of Järvelä’s industrial identity, having developed through crises, market shifts and renewal.
The mill’s history includes significant innovations, such as the NewSize plywood launched in 2000, which strengthened its position as one of Finland’s largest birch plywood mills. The plywood mill has recently carried out several investments aimed at further improving production quality, competitiveness and efficiency.
“Investments will enable volume growth, streamline production and ease the related internal logistics. The investments also include automation of production stages,” Pahta summarizes.
Koskisen manufactures customized birch plywood panels for light and heavy commercial vehicles, construction, packaging, interiors, furniture and the joinery industry. Its largest customer groups are the construction, vehicle and furniture industries.
