Wall art from Koskisen birch plywood

Audiocheck wall art is created from domestic birch plywood

Koskisen’s Finnish plywood products are known worldwide for their high quality, customised solutions, and strong customer orientation. Koskisen plywood is manufactured from a renewable raw material, Finnish birch, which is naturally a durable and strong material for both construction and vehicle flooring. The light, uniform birch surface offers a clear Scandinavian look for a wide variety of environments and works also excellently in interior applications such as wall and ceiling panels or as a furniture material. Juuso Pitkänen at his company Audiocheck creates parametric wall art and acoustic artworks using Koskisen birch plywood for homes and professional use.

Parametric wall art is a digitally designed interior element, usually made from wood or other sheet material by laser or CNC cutting. Pitkänen’s works are composed of rhythmically arranged parts, often wave-like or geometric in form, which together create a three-dimensional and lively surface. Parametric wall art represents a modern interior design trend in which architectural design and art come together as an impressive, functional whole.

Rhythm and high-quality acoustics

According to Pitkänen, the creation of his artwork begins with an idea that is first shaped into a three-dimensional digital model and ultimately into a precise form in birch plywood. From the design, a striking 3D-structure is created, consisting of Koskisen’s 15-millimetre-thick birch plywood slats and the rhythmic gaps between them. Once the form has been refined, the model is converted for CNC machining, in which the machine cuts each part precisely according to the original model. Pitkänen says that the slats are assembled in order, using numbered parts, allowing the ensemble to be positioned easily.

Juuso Pitkänen says he has drawn inspiration for his work from foreign websites, as similar production is rare in Finland. Pitkänen has passionately pursued audio reproduction for about 20 years, focusing for the past 10 years on improving home acoustics as well. “In audio circles, acoustic treatment is considered an important part of the whole, but its visual appearance often resembles a studio-like environment, which does not always suit home interiors”, Pitkänen notes.

Each piece has a backing panel that makes installation simple and unobtrusive. The slats are attached to the panel with a custom L-hook structure that keeps the surface visually seamless. Although the processing is highly automated, each part is finished by hand: the surfaces are carefully sanded to ensure that each piece is of high quality and ready to be hung as is. The works are striking interior elements even without surface treatment, but if desired, the customer can finish the piece in their own style or entrust the finishing work to Pitkänen.

Koskisen birch plywood is a striking and functional material

Pitkänen’s idea was to combine high-quality acoustic treatment with an artistic appearance. His goal was to create wall art that looks good while also improving sound quality. According to Pitkänen, for these reasons Audiocheck products use Koskisen’s high-quality birch plywood, whose uniform and clean surface clearly stands out to its advantage in visually striking works. Koskisen birch plywood is also considered a premium-level option internationally. “After discussions and testing, I decided to use Koskisen plywood, which works excellently in my pieces”, Pitkänen states.
